Kentucky Awards $6 Million in Tobacco Settlement Funds

The Kentucky Soil and Water Conservation Commission has selected 944 projects that protect water quality and prevent soil erosion on Kentucky farms to receive $6 million in tobacco settlement funds, the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet
announced Monday.
The awards ranged from $257 to $20,000. The average award was for $6,172, with the state reimbursing 75 percent of each project's cost and the landowner providing a 25 percent match. Most projects have a funding cap of $7,500.
The commission has obligated more than $155 million in state cost share over the past 25 years. This money goes to Kentucky farmers to install projects such as livestock waterers, grassed waterways, the establishment of rotational grazing, and cover crops.
Funds are distributed with the assistance of the 121 soil and water conservation districts across the Commonwealth.
