Hot, Dry Weather Descends on Kentucky
Kentucky Ag Connection - 07/18/2017
Kentucky experienced slightly above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall over the past week. Precipitation for the week totaled 0.30 inches, 0.70 inches below normal. Temperatures averaged 78 degrees for the week, 1 degrees above normal.
Topsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 14 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus.
Subsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 12 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Days suitable for fieldwork averaged 6.0 out of a possible seven.
Primary activities this week included cutting hay and spraying row crops. Very wet weather early in the month gave way to hot, dry conditions typical for this point in the season. There is a presence of disease in some crops, but it is not widespread. Some crops
were helped by the drier conditions, however others have been stressed by the intense heat throughout the state. Also pasture condition has been negatively affected by the hot, dry weather in some areas.
