KDA, Corn Growers, Tourism Help Feed the Hungry

Low-income Scott Countians now have a more abundant supply of food thanks to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA), the Kentucky Corn Growers Association (KyCGA), and the Georgetown-Scott County Tourism Commission. The three
organizations combined to donate more than 4,400 cans of non-perishable foods to the AMEN House in Georgetown.
"The AMEN House shares my belief that no one should go hungry," said Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles, a native of Scott County. "These donations will provide food for many of our neighbors for months to come. I am deeply grateful to the KyCGA
and the tourism commission for their generosity and compassion."
The KDA and the tourism commission donated more than 3,000 cans of non-perishable foods that were used for displays at the Kentucky State Fair in August at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. The KyCGA gave another 1,400 cans.
The tourism commission sponsored two state fair displays featuring food cans -- a "silo" in the AgLand space, and a "bowl" adjacent to the KDA office. The displays were posted to raise awareness of the fact that one out of every six Kentuckians -- including
one in five Kentucky children -- are food insecure.
The AMEN House collects food as well as clothing for Scott Countians in need as part of its mission to alleviate hunger and help its clients on the path to sustainability. To find out more, go to amenhouse.org.
