Kentucky Farmers Make Good Progress on Harvest
Kentucky Ag Connection - 10/26/2021

Kentucky experienced above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall over the past week. Precipitation for the week totaled 0.16 inches, 0.54 inches below normal. Temperatures averaged 58 degrees for the week, 2 degrees above normal. Topsoil moisture was rated 2 percent very short, 14 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 3 percent very short, 16 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Days suitable for fieldwork averaged 5.4 out of a possible seven.

Primary activities for this week included harvesting corn and soybeans, stripping tobacco, and seeding winter wheat. With weather conducive to fieldwork through most of the week, farmers forged ahead making strong progress. In parts of the state precipitation moved in by the weekend, however nice weather prevailed. As the harvest rolls along, grain yields look promising overall. Some soybean quality issues were reported in early maturing crops, however initial reports seem to indicate good to average yields. Housed tobacco was reported 75 percent in good condition as stripping moves along.

Pasture condition is mostly good, but has shown some deterioration as temperatures cool and rain becomes less frequent. Winter wheat is being planted steadily with a small amount of the crop emerged.
