Cause of Nebraska Grain Elevator Explosion Still Undetermined
USAgNet - 06/14/2018

The cause of the explosion that blew a large hole in the Andersen Farms grain elevator two weeks ago is still unknown, but officials say residents can move back into their homes after the elevator was partly demolished Monday night.

Mahon said a sense of emergency has lifted from the contractors, homeowners in the area and police officers who had been monitoring the area in the two weeks leading up to the weakened elevator's demolition, reports the Sioux City Journal.

However, the official state of emergency, which was declared May 30 by the City of South Sioux City, has not yet been lifted. Merithew said the council deferred a vote on lifting it during its regularly scheduled meeting Monday.

As far as the cause, the contractor, Terminal Solutions, is removing two pieces of the elevator that could point to a possible cause for the explosion, said South Sioux City Police Chief Ed Mahon.

As of Tuesday, all streets are opened except for West 25th Street directly in front of the construction area.

Merithew said about 100 feet of the tower remains in the air, but that portion has been deemed safe. Terminal Solutions will use a wrecking ball to demolish the rest of the structure, he said, and then will clear out the subterranean portion.
