Kentucky experienced well above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall over the past week. Precipitation for the week totaled 0.63 inches, 0.09 inches below normal. Temperatures averaged 66 degrees for the week, 8 degrees above normal. Topsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 2 percent very short, 12 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Days suitable for fieldwork averaged 5.2 out of a possible seven.
Primary activities for this week included harvesting corn and soybeans, stripping tobacco, and seeding winter wheat. Although some spotty rain stymied fieldwork at times during the past week, farmers forged ahead at every opportunity.
There are reports of promising grain yields, however the full extent is not yet known.
Housed tobacco was reported 92 percent in good condition. Very little tobacco houseburn was reported. The reporting of houseburn was as follows: 1 percent moderate, 5 percent light, and 94 percent with none.
Pasture condition is mostly good thanks to some unseasonably warm temperatures and intermittent rainfall.
Winter wheat planting is moving along steadily with 9 percent of the crop emerged.
