$110 Million USDA boost for meat & poultry industry

$110 Million USDA boost for meat & poultry industry

By Jamie Martin

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack revealed a significant investment of $110 million to expand the nation's meat and poultry processing capabilities.

This funding, sourced from the American Rescue Plan, aims to strengthen American food supply chains and reduce costs for consumers by increasing competition. The investment will fund the establishment of new facilities and the expansion of existing ones, creating jobs and supporting local economies.

The initiative, part of the broader Administration’s efforts to create a more resilient and competitive agricultural sector, targets enhancing independent processing capacities.

This move is expected to provide more market opportunities for producers and bring down prices at the grocery store, offering consumers more and potentially cheaper options.

The Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) will distribute over $83 million to 24 independent processors in 15 states. This will include building new processing plants and expanding the capacity of existing ones. Additionally, the Local Meat Capacity (Local MCap) Grant Program will distribute $26.9 million to 33 projects in 23 states, aimed at increasing local processing capabilities and supporting small-scale producers.

These programs not only aim to enhance meat and poultry processing infrastructure but also focus on increasing food security and supporting the economic stability of rural areas.

With this investment, the USDA continues to fulfill its mission of fostering agricultural innovation and ensuring equitable food access for all Americans.
