Kentucky State University researchers are advancing new technologies aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability in controlled environment agriculture.
Recent studies conducted by Dr. Milon Chowdhury, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering, and graduate research assistant Rubel Reza focused on water conservation, nutrient management, and sustainable crop production.
The researchers recently presented their findings at two national scientific conferences, highlighting practical solutions for indoor and greenhouse growers. One study examined the use of moisture sensors to improve irrigation management in hydroponic tomato production.
By monitoring the actual moisture content of the growing media rather than relying on fixed watering schedules, the system can deliver water and nutrients more precisely, potentially reducing resource use while maintaining crop performance.
Another project investigated how organic fertilizers, growing substrates, and light quality influence microgreen production. The research aims to help growers achieve high-quality yields while reducing dependence on synthetic agricultural inputs.
Reza also presented research on recovering nutrients from organic waste through anaerobic digestion. The process converts waste materials into liquid organic fertilizer, creating opportunities to recycle nutrients, reduce waste, and decrease reliance on conventional fertilizers.
In addition to presenting research, Dr. Chowdhury contributed to several professional activities, including moderating technical sessions, evaluating educational materials, and serving on industry committees. He also continues to expand his leadership role within the American Society for Horticultural Science.
“These conferences provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the innovative research being conducted at Kentucky State University while building partnerships that can expand our research and educational opportunities,” Dr. Chowdhury said.
“Our work focuses on developing practical technologies and management strategies that can help resource-limited growers produce crops more efficiently while conserving water, nutrients, energy, and other resources.”
The presentations created opportunities to connect with researchers and industry professionals from across the country, supporting future collaboration in automation, nutrient recovery, controlled environment agriculture, and sustainable food production.
