Jason McWhorter Wins Golden Owl Award in Kentucky

By Blake Jackson

South Laurel High School teacher Jason McWhorter of Laurel County has been honored as a regional Golden Owl Award recipient, recognizing his long-standing dedication to agricultural education. Raised on a farm and influenced by parents who were both educators, McWhorter initially had no plans to enter teaching until his high school agriculture teacher, Vernon Vaughn, encouraged him to pursue the field.

McWhorter earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Kentucky and later completed a Rank I in leadership from Eastern Kentucky University. He began his teaching career in 1998 and joined South Laurel High School in 2001, where he continues to teach.

In the classroom, McWhorter emphasizes making agriculture engaging while showcasing its diverse career opportunities. His program focuses heavily on hands-on learning, including genetics lessons where students study inherited traits and greenhouse projects where they grow and sell plants.

“Hands‑on experiences just make it real life, and they see where agriculture comes to life. I think that’s the biggest thing that makes it fun for them,” he said.

McWhorter also partners with local agricultural businesses and community organizations, creating strong support for his program. Reflecting on the recognition, he described the award as meaningful and a reflection of his passion for teaching and working with students.
