Kentucky Farmers Anticipate Strong Crop Production



Corn production in Kentucky is forecast at 265 million bushels, up 5% from the previous crop. Yield is estimated at 183 bushel per acre, down 1 bushel from the 2020 level. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 1.45 million acres, up 70,000 acres from 2020. The U.S. corn production is forecast at 14.8 billion bushels, up 4% from 2020. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 174.6 bushels per acre, up 2.6 bushels from 2020. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 84.5 million acres, unchanged from the June forecast but up 2% from 2020.

Soybean production for Kentucky is forecast at 105 million bushels, increased 4% from 2020. Yield is estimated at 54.0 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushels from a year ago. Acreage for harvest as beans was estimated at 1.94 million acres, up 100,000 acres from the previous year. U.S. soybean production is forecast at 4.34 billion bushels, up 5% from last year. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 50.0 bushels per acre, down 0.2 bushels from last year. Area for harvest is forecast at 86.7 million acres, unchanged from June but up 5% from 2020.

Kentucky farmers expect to harvest 32.6 million bushels of winter wheat during 2021. The expected crop for 2021 would be up 52% from the previous year. Growers expect a yield of 88.0 bushels per acre, up 25.0 bushel from 2020 and up 2.0 bushels from July. Farmers expect to harvest 370,000 acres for grain. Winter wheat production for the Nation was forecast at 1.32 billion bushels, up 13% from 2020. The United States yield is forecast at 51.8 bushels per acre, down 1.8 bushels from last month and up 0.9 bushels from last year. The expected area to be harvested for grain or seed totals 25.4 million acres, up 11% from last year.

Kentucky burley tobacco production is forecast at 74.0 million pounds, up 3% from 2020. Yield is projected at 2,000 pounds per acre, up 50 pounds from the 2020 crop. Harvested acreage was estimated at 37,000 acres, unchanged acres from last year's crop. For the burley producing states production is forecast at 86.9 million pounds, up 3% from last year. Burley growers plan to harvest 43,450 acres, up slightly from 2020. Yields were expected to average 2,000 pounds per acre, up 44 pounds from last year. Production of Kentucky dark fire-cured tobacco is forecast at 27.3 million pounds, up 32% from the previous year. Dark air-cured tobacco production is forecast at 15.4 million pounds, up 7% from last year.

Production of alfalfa hay production is forecast at 473,000 tons, 7% below the 2020 level. Other hay production is estimated at 5.04 million tons, up 2% from last year.
