South Louisiana Rail Boosts Rice Exports

By Jamie Martin

South Louisiana Rail Facility (SLRF) announced a $2.1 million expansion of its Jefferson Davis Parish operations to improve rice processing and export efficiency. The project includes modern bagging and warehouse systems designed to boost productivity and help Louisiana rice farmers reach new international markets.

The initiative is set to generate 10 direct jobs and retain 12 positions. Louisiana Economic Development (LED) estimates the project will add 51 indirect jobs, totalling 61 across the Southwest Region.

“South Louisiana Rail Facility’s expansion is a powerful example of how strategic investment in infrastructure fuels long-term growth,” said LED Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois. “This project strengthens the foundation of Louisiana’s agricultural economy by supporting farmers, creating jobs, and expanding access to global markets. It reflects the mission of LED’s Driving Louisiana Opportunity tour, highlighting companies that are building our economy, reinvesting in their communities and creating opportunities for Louisiana’s people.”

At the Lacassine Agri-Industrial Park, SLRF will soon be able to package milled rice in 50-pound and 50-kilogram bags, addressing the growing export demand. Located at the Lacassine Agri-Industrial Park, the expansion enables SLRF to package milled rice in 50-pound and 50-kilogram bags, meeting growing international demand. “At South Louisiana Rail Facility, we’re not just moving commodities – we’re driving economic growth, strengthening Louisiana’s agricultural industry, and connecting our farmers to global markets,” said  SLRF Vice Chairman Ronnie Petre. “Our commitment to efficiency, innovation and partnership is what sets us apart.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2025, with completion expected by May 2026. The state has committed up to $500,000 from the Economic Development Award Program for equipment costs.

This builds on SLRF’s 2020 investment of $1.6 million to establish a rice mill in Jefferson Davis Parish, further expanding Louisiana’s capacity for rice processing and export growth.
