A new international study has provided a clearer picture of how drought affects crop production across the world. Researchers analyzed drought sensitivity in 17 major crops and identified regions where agricultural production faces the greatest risk from water shortages.
The crops studied included staples such as rice, wheat, corn, and soybeans. These crops play a critical role in feeding the world's population and represent approximately 75% of global food production.
The research focused on understanding how different farming systems respond to drought conditions. Scientists evaluated both rainfed and irrigated agriculture and developed measures to assess crop resilience and vulnerability.
Results showed that rainfed crops are significantly more sensitive to drought. Since these crops depend solely on rainfall, extended dry periods can lead to reduced growth and lower yields. Without access to supplemental water, farmers have fewer options to protect production.
Irrigated crops demonstrated greater stability during drought events. By receiving water through irrigation systems, crops can continue growing even when rainfall is below normal levels. This additional water supply helps reduce the impact of drought on harvest outcomes.
Based on the findings, researchers identified several drought-sensitive hotspots around the globe. Major areas of concern include portions of the Midwestern United States, eastern Brazil, eastern Spain, and central and northern India. Crops in these regions face a greater risk of production losses when drought conditions occur.
The study also introduced new methods for evaluating drought-related agricultural risks. These metrics can support decision-making by helping governments, researchers, and farming communities better understand where investments in drought preparedness may be most beneficial.
