UK horsey hustle 5K - fun run for equine education
Kentucky Ag Connection - 03/05/2024

The University of Kentucky's Ag Equine Programs is gearing up for its third annual Horsey Hustle 5K on April 14th. This event, held in the heart of Kentucky's horse country, serves a dual purpose: providing a fun and engaging community event while raising crucial funds for the Student Experience and Applied Education Fund.

This fund directly supports UK students' equine-related experiences, both academically and recreationally. Past participants, like Jaida Alee and Loralye Page, have shared how the Horsey Hustle fosters a sense of community and belonging among participants. They've also witnessed the event's evolution over the years, transforming from a simple 5K into a full-fledged day filled with activities and opportunities to connect.

The Student Experience and Applied Education Fund has demonstrably impacted students' lives. This year, a grant from the fund helped offset travel costs for the Wildcat Wranglers, a student organization, enabling them to attend industry and outreach events. This not only enriches their educational experience but also provides valuable networking opportunities, bridging the gap between academics and the professional equine world.

Another student benefiting from the fund is Chloe Young, who will be presenting her research at the upcoming International Society of Equitation Science (ISES) conference in New Zealand. This prestigious opportunity allows her to showcase her work to a global audience of equine researchers, veterinarians, and practitioners, significantly enhancing her research background for future academic pursuits.

The Horsey Hustle has garnered widespread support from the community, attracting sponsors like Stonestreet Farm, EJMS CPA, and The Jockey Club. "We are grateful for all of our generous sponsors," expressed James MacLeod, director of UK Ag Equine Programs. "This event offers so much, and spring is the perfect time for outdoor activities. We welcome everyone to join us and support our students."

Registration for the Horsey Hustle is $35 and includes a commemorative T-shirt for those who register by the early bird deadline of March 10th. Those unable to attend can still contribute by donating through the registration page. The event will be held at Coldstream Park in Lexington, Kentucky, with onsite registration starting at 9:30 am. Participants are encouraged to bring chairs or picnic blankets to further enhance their experience and enjoy the community atmosphere.

The Horsey Hustle 5K presents a unique opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy a fun-filled day, and contribute to the future of the equine industry by supporting the educational and professional development of the next generation of equine professionals.
