Kentuckians with qualifying medical conditions can expect faster access to medical cannabis thanks to the Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program. Governor Andy Beshear announced significant progress, moving key application dates ahead of schedule.
"We're expediting the timeline to bring medical cannabis to those who need it," said Gov. Beshear. "Starting July 1st, businesses can apply for licenses – six months earlier than planned."
The program has been providing resources to help businesses navigate the application process, including webinars and application guides.
"Fairness, transparency, and customer service are our priorities for cannabis business licensing," said Sam Flynn, head of the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis.
Physicians and Advanced Practice Nurses (APRNs) can also begin applying for authorization to write medical cannabis certifications on July 1st. The program is partnering with medical boards to ensure patients have access to qualified providers throughout the state.
While patients won't be able to apply for medical cannabis cards until January 1st, 2025, these advancements represent a significant step forward.
"We're committed to providing safe and affordable access to medical cannabis for qualified Kentuckians," said Cabinet Secretary Eric Friedlander.
These developments follow recent legislative actions. In April, House Bill 829 moved the business licensing application date to July 2024. Additionally, regulations for patient cardholders and medical cannabis businesses have been established.
The Governor's signature on Senate Bill 47 in March 2023 marked the legalization of medical cannabis in Kentucky. This program aims to provide much-needed relief to qualified patients while ensuring a safe and well-regulated industry.
