Kentucky State University (KSU) has secured a significant win with a $7 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This grant will fuel the creation of a statewide research network – Driving AgTech Research and Education in Kentucky (DARE-KY).
DARE-KY focuses on agriculture, climate change, and improving access to fresh food. Partnering with KSU on this initiative are the University of Pikeville, Bluegrass Community and Technology College, Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation, and FoodChain Inc.
The project champions sustainable agriculture through soilless food systems. These systems will utilize hydroponics and leverage fish waste as fertilizer to cultivate fresh produce.
"This is a historic announcement for KSU," declared KSU President Koffi Akakpo, emphasizing the project's impact on the state's economy, education, and future.
The grant announcement was met with celebration, attracting representatives from U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell's and Congressman James Comer's offices. Local officials, state lawmakers, and Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet personnel were also present.
This news follows recent financial support for KSU from the Kentucky General Assembly. Earlier this year, the legislature allocated $60 million for campus maintenance and repairs, along with $5 million to design a new health science education building.
Additionally, a 2022 law provided $23 million to address budget shortfalls and mandated a management improvement plan overseen by the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE).
While KSU has faced past challenges, including an accreditation warning and financial mismanagement, university officials highlighted progress. They reported completing over half (53 out of 130) of the improvement plan objectives to lawmakers earlier this month.
CPE President Aaron Thompson expressed optimism, stating that the NSF grant "provides a foundation for future possibilities." He anticipates increased enrollment, student success, innovative programs, and more grant opportunities for KSU.
