Build a stronger KY food chain $8.6M in grants available

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky's food and agriculture scene is about to get a major shot in the arm, thanks to millions in grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) program. Get ready, because applications open soon!

Over $8.6 million is on the table to empower Kentucky entities and build a stronger, more resilient local food system. This funding, part of a larger $420 million national initiative, targets the middle of the supply chain, aiming to bolster infrastructure, processing, and distribution for a variety of products, from dairy and grains to aquaculture and specialty crops. (Sorry, meat and poultry producers, this one's not for you.)

The grants come in two flavors:

  • Infrastructure Grants: Build your food system resilience with grants ranging from $100,000 to $3 million. Got an innovative project to expand aggregation, processing, or distribution? This is your chance. Just remember, matching funds are required (from 25% to 50% depending on your business status).
  • Equipment Grants: Need a boost for essential equipment? These grants, ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, can cover approved purchases outright. No matching funds needed!

To ensure these grants truly meet Kentucky's needs, KDA listened to the people. A public survey gathered valuable input, shaping the state plan to reflect the voices of Kentuckians. And to help you navigate the application process, KDA has enlisted three key partners: Kentucky Center for Agriculture & Rural Development (KCARD), The Food Connection (TFC), and Community Farm Alliance (CFA). Their roles will be announced once the state plan is approved.

Speaking of approval, KDA's state plan is currently under USDA review. Once it gets the green light, the application portal swings open in January 2024. So, mark your calendars, Kentucky agribusinesses! This is your chance to take your operations to the next level and build a stronger, more vibrant food system for the Bluegrass State.
