Young people are being encouraged to turn their agricultural ideas into real-world projects through a new funding opportunity designed to support innovation, leadership, and community development. The initiative aims to help youth organizations create projects that make a positive impact on agriculture while developing future leaders in the industry.
The program will provide a total of $17,500 in funding to support youth-led agricultural projects. The funding is intended to help young people transform creative ideas into practical solutions that benefit farming, food systems, sustainability efforts, and rural communities. Organizations interested in participating must submit their applications by December 1, 2026.
Agriculture continues to face new challenges and opportunities as technology advances and environmental concerns grow. Young people often bring fresh perspectives and innovative thinking to these issues. By supporting youth-driven projects, the program seeks to encourage the next generation of agricultural leaders to explore new approaches that can improve farming practices and strengthen rural areas.
Projects can focus on a wide range of topics connected to agriculture. These include agricultural production, food access, conservation, sustainability, agricultural technology, and other systems that contribute to a stronger agricultural sector. Participants are encouraged to identify challenges in their communities and propose creative solutions that can deliver measurable results.
Three projects will receive funding through the program. The top project will receive an award of $10,000. A second project will earn an Excellence Award of $5,000, while a third project will receive an Impact Award valued at $2,500. All funding must be used to carry out the proposed projects and achieve the goals outlined in the applications.
“Some of the best ideas for the future of agriculture may come from the young people who will help lead it,” said Hannah Walker, community investment manager at Farm Credit Mid-America. “Through the Youth in Ag Innovation Program, we want to give young people the opportunity and resources to take an idea, put it into action and make a difference in agriculture and their communities.”
The opportunity is open to youth-led groups that are connected with recognized organizations. Examples include 4-H clubs, FFA chapters, school agriculture clubs, science organizations, and other youth-serving groups. Participants are generally recommended to be between the ages of 12 and 18 and must work with an adult advisor or sponsor who can provide guidance throughout the project.
Youth involvement is a key requirement for the program. Participants must take an active role in every stage of the project, including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation. Organizers want young people to gain hands-on experience while building leadership skills and learning how projects are managed from start to finish.
Applications should clearly explain the project's objectives, expected outcomes, and implementation timeline. Organizers are looking for projects that demonstrate measurable benefits for agriculture, youth development, or local communities. Strong cooperation with community partners and evidence of rural leadership development will also strengthen an application.
A judging process will be used to select the finalists. Applications will be reviewed based on several factors, including creativity, originality, project feasibility, youth engagement, and the overall quality of the proposal. Evaluators will also consider the potential impact each project could have on agriculture and the broader community.
After the evaluation process, three finalist teams will be invited to present their ideas at an agricultural leadership meeting in February 2027. During the event, attendees will vote to determine the final award rankings. This process allows participants to showcase their work while gaining valuable public speaking and presentation experience.
The top award winner will receive an additional opportunity to return the following year and share the completed project's results and impact. This follow-up presentation will highlight successful outcomes and demonstrate how youth-led innovation can contribute to the future of agriculture.
Programs like this play an important role in supporting young leaders and encouraging innovation within the agricultural sector. By providing funding, mentorship, and opportunities to develop practical skills, the initiative helps young people become active contributors to their communities while addressing important agricultural challenges.
As agriculture continues to evolve, empowering youth to develop new ideas and solutions can help create a stronger and more sustainable future for rural communities and the farming industry.
