35,000 responses shape UK extension future programs

The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension has released a comprehensive report detailing the needs and priorities of Kentucky residents.

The data, gathered through a statewide survey and supplemented with extensive research, will guide the extension's future programming and initiatives.

“The community assessment is an important tool that helps us shape educational programming and ensure we are meeting the needs of communities across the state,” said Laura Stephenson, associate dean for extension at UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. “We are so grateful for the enthusiastic participation in the survey and are happy to share the results.”

The survey, conducted between August and December 2023, garnered over 35,000 responses from Kentucky residents across all 120 counties. Participants were asked about their needs in agriculture, youth development, family and individual development, and community and economic development.

"Our county agents were instrumental in encouraging Kentuckians to participate," said Lola Adedokun, assistant extension professor.

The results, available on a public dashboard, offer a detailed snapshot of Kentucky's needs, allowing for data-driven programming tailored to specific populations.

To enhance the data's utility, researchers incorporated secondary data from the Census Bureau and other sources, creating a comprehensive picture of each county.

"This is invaluable information that you just can't get any other way, especially for rural areas," said Julie N. Zimmerman, who led the data analysis.

The assessment is already making a difference. Harrison County Cooperative Extension agent Shelley Meyer used the findings to expand exercise programs, aligning with residents' expressed needs.

One surprising finding was the relatively low awareness of Cooperative Extension. "That gives us the opportunity to expand and reach more people across Kentucky," Adedokun said.

The data will inform the development of the extension's Plan of Work, a five-year roadmap for each county. Three overarching priorities emerged: strengthening Kentucky's farms and food systems, building the health and well-being of Kentuckians, and fostering vibrant communities.

By combining research, education, and community engagement, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension aims to address the critical needs of its citizens.
