Pork producers, industry representatives, and state legislators gathered at the Franklin County Fairgrounds to celebrate Kentucky’s pork industry as Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell officially proclaimed October as Pork Month.
The announcement came during the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Legislative Pig Showmanship Competition, which brought together lawmakers and local youth for a hands-on agricultural experience.
“This month we celebrate our agriculture producers who work hard to raise pork, healthy, lean, and, without a doubt, delicious protein for our family dinner tables,” Commissioner Shell said. “Pork plays an important role in our state and this month we celebrate that importance and the work of our producers across the state.”
During the event, legislators joined Commissioner Shell in the show ring to learn the basics of swine showmanship under the guidance of young exhibitors. Deputy Commissioner Warren Beeler served as judge, combining his expertise and humor to make the friendly competition both educational and entertaining.
The event recognized the vital contributions of Kentucky’s pork producers and celebrated with the families who sustain the state’s agriculture industry.
Kentucky’s pork industry continues to be a major contributor to the state’s economy, with more than 860,000 swine produced annually. In 2024, pork sales accounted for 2.2 percent of the state’s total agricultural cash receipts, generating $170.2 million for farmers.
“This October, we celebrate more than pork - we honor the farm families who bring it to the table. Kentucky pork producers are making a real impact by strengthening rural economies, feeding families, and upholding the highest standards of animal care and sustainability," said Annie Tolle, Kentucky Pork Producers Association board member.
"Events like the Kentucky Legislature Showmanship Showdown not only highlight the importance of agriculture in our state but also connect farming and policy while showcasing the next generation of agriculture’s brightest leaders. As a board member, I’m proud to celebrate the hard work, innovation, and care that define Kentucky’s pork industry.”
Based on 2023 data, Kentucky’s pork industry supported approximately $459 million in personal income and $646 million in gross national product. With over 1,800 swine operations statewide, Kentucky ranks among the top 20 states in total swine production.
Most operations are concentrated in western Kentucky, where farmers benefit from proximity to key feed crops such as corn and soybeans.
