At the 2025 Kentucky State Extension Conference, a joint effort by the University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University, extension professionals convened to focus on their locally rooted mission of improving lives across all 120 Kentucky counties.

Under the theme “Connect, Cultivate and Celebrate,” the conference provided a platform for extension agents, specialists, and staff to discuss, showcase, and gain recognition for their efforts in addressing key challenges within Kentucky communities and achieving significant results for the people they serve.

During her opening remarks, Laura Stephenson, vice president for land-grant engagement and dean of Martin-Gatton CAFE, emphasized extension’s vital role in Kentucky communities.

"In nearly every Kentucky community, our extension professionals are on the ground, listening to the concerns and challenges of our farmers, families, businesses and industries," said Stephenson. "Our deep local connections ensure that the research produced in our college is impactful and directly serves the needs of Kentuckians. We work side-by-side with Kentuckians to address the most pressing needs in our communities."

The conference also featured an awards ceremony recognizing UK agents and specialists for their exceptional contributions to extension’s mission.

The Patricia Brantley Todd Awards of Excellence honored Sarah Fannin, Katherine Jury, and Janet Turley for their impactful service and innovation.

The Wills Extension Leadership Development Award supported the professional growth of Katie Alexander, David Fourqurean, Kim Leonberger, Sharee Schoonover, and John David Tucker.

The Kentucky Association of State Extension Professionals (KASEP) also presented awards for Outstanding Extension Program (Bethany Pratt and Nicole Breazeale), Outstanding Extension Project (Nichole Huff and team), Outstanding Extension Specialist (Alexis Sheffield), Outstanding Extension Associate (Anna Cason), and the M.D. Whitaker Award for Extension Excellence (Julie Zimmerman).

“By working together, we will continue to build a stronger, healthier and more prosperous Kentucky,” Stephenson concluded. “Together, let’s continue to improve the lives of all Kentuckians.”
