HempWood takes top honors in Kentucky innovation contest

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky's innovative spirit has been recognized with HempWood flooring being named the "2024 Coolest Thing Made in Kentucky." This win, announced on Earth Day, highlights the state's commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

Produced in Murray, HempWood flooring utilizes regionally grown hemp, a rapidly renewable resource. This eco-friendly material boasts USDA Certified BioBased status and eliminates harmful VOCs, making it a clear choice for environmentally conscious builders.

The win extends beyond HempWood itself. Kentucky's soybean industry celebrates alongside them. The company's adhesive formulation incorporates soy flour, replacing traditional chemical adhesives often containing formaldehyde. This innovative approach aligns perfectly with the Kentucky Soybean Board's mission to explore new applications for their crops.

"We've strategically invested in research to support HempWood's use of soy flour in their adhesives," said Kentucky Soybean Board Chairman Barry Alexander. "This award exemplifies the potential of soy flour as a viable alternative in manufacturing. With rising demand for soybean oil, exploring new uses for other components is crucial. HempWood showcases this potential, and we're proud to support their success."

HempWood's recognition underscores Kentucky's ability to foster innovation while promoting environmental responsibility. This win marks a significant achievement for both the company and the state's agricultural sector.
