Kentucky corn growers are actively advocating for legislation that would allow year-round sales of E15 gasoline. The Kentucky Corn Growers Association (KYCGA), in conjunction with the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), is pushing for the reintroduction of the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act in the House and Senate.
This legislation aims to eliminate the current restrictions on E15 sales during the summer months. E15, a blend of gasoline with 15% ethanol, offers a potential solution for lowering fuel costs, as ethanol is often a more affordable option.
“On behalf of the KYCGA, I would like to extend a thank you to Congressman Comer for co-sponsoring the bill, as well as the agriculture community, agribusinesses, and industry partners for leading this call to action,” said Josh Lancaster, KYCGA President. “Your involvement has not gone unnoticed, and this collective effort shows Kentucky farmers and agricultural supporters’ strong commitment to increasing corn demand.”
The NCGA recently led a nationwide campaign urging farmers and agricultural advocates to demonstrate their support for year-round E15.
The campaign garnered nearly 9,000 signatures from 47 states, with Kentucky contributing 551 signatures, making it the NCGA's most successful campaign to date.
KYCGA emphasized that expanding E15 availability could significantly boost corn demand. Currently, approximately one-third of U.S. corn production goes towards ethanol, which adds an estimated 15 billion gallons to the nation's fuel supply annually.
NCGA President Kenneth Hartman highlighted that passing legislation for year-round E15 would come at no cost to the government while providing substantial benefits.
It could bolster the U.S. energy sector, offer relief to consumers facing high fuel prices, and enhance economic security in rural areas.
According to Hartman, drivers who consistently use E15 can save an average of 25 cents per gallon. While the EPA has granted waivers for summer E15 sales in recent years, Kentucky growers are seeking a permanent legislative solution to provide consumers with consistent access to this fuel option.
Despite a near-victory in December when language to lift the E15 ban was included in a government funding resolution, the provision was ultimately removed.
However, with renewed efforts and strong support from the agricultural community, the goal of securing year-round E15 access remains within reach.
