Kentucky Declares April as Goat Month for Agriculture

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky's goat industry received a significant boost as Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell signed a proclamation declaring April as Goat Month in the state.

This recognition highlights the multifaceted contributions of goats to Kentucky's agricultural landscape.

“This month we celebrate the diversity goats bring to our agricultural landscape across Kentucky,” Commissioner Shell said. “They certainly add a uniqueness to farm life, but they are also an excellent source of protein and dairy products. This month we salute all that goats add to our state’s agricultural outlook.”

In the U.S., goats are primarily valued for their dairy production (milk, yogurt, cheese) and meat (chevon). Kentucky's 5,800 dairy goats contribute significantly to quality breeding stock and natural skin products, ranking the state 23rd nationally for milk goat production.

The popularity of goat meat is on the rise due to its nutritional benefits. Chevon is a lean meat with low saturated fat and cholesterol, while being high in iron, protein, and essential vitamins.

Kentucky ranks sixth in the nation for meat goat inventory, boasting 60,000 head, a 5.9 percent increase since 2024, managed by nearly 4,000 farmers.

Beyond their direct products, goats offer environmental benefits by naturally controlling noxious weeds, promoting healthier forests, and aiding in wildfire prevention.

Kelley Yates, executive director of the Kentucky Sheep and Goat Development Office, stated, “From chevon to mohair to soaps, Kentucky's goat industry has a place on every farm and in every home.

Our producers pride themselves on raising healthy, quality animals that provide consumers with wholesome and beneficial products they know are nutritious and safe for their families.

Kentucky's consumers are fortunate to be able to access these products through farmer's markets, roadside stands, grocery stores, and online.”

The Kentucky goat industry contributes over $3.6 million in revenue to the state's agricultural sector. Warren County leads in goat production with nearly 2,800 head. To celebrate Goat Month, a special six-course chevon dining experience will be held on April 24th in Robards, KY.

Goat products are also widely available at local farmers' markets, and the Kentucky Sheep and Goat Development Office provides resources, including a buyer's guide and cooking tips, on their website.
