The University of Kentucky One Health Initiative (UKOHI), housed within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, has announced a new call for seed grant proposals. Faculty and researchers from Kentucky colleges and universities, along with professionals from state agencies, are encouraged to apply.
Supported through a gift from The Bill Gatton Foundation, the initiative will fund projects that build new interdisciplinary research teams and generate preliminary data addressing critical challenges in Kentucky using One Health principles.
Launched last year, UKOHI serves as a collaborative hub for research, teaching and Extension efforts focused on strengthening human, animal and environmental health across the Commonwealth.
“The UKOHI fosters collaborative partnerships among our faculty, staff and students, as well as members of state agencies and other Kentucky colleges and universities, to identify and resolve significant health threats to humans, animals, and the environment,” said S. Reddy Palli, Department of Entomology chair at Martin-Gatton CAFE, state entomologist and one of The Bill Gatton Foundation Distinguished Professors.
“We are excited to review new proposals that can help us advance One Health concepts to create healthier communities in Kentucky.”
Proposals must clearly define a pressing issue such as zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance, food safety or environmental health and explain how One Health approaches will be applied. Teams must include investigators from at least two disciplines, colleges or agencies, with a full-time faculty or senior researcher serving as lead PI.
Awards will total up to $200,000 this cycle, with individual grants capped at $50,000 for 12-month projects. Applications are due April 1, with awards announced beginning May 1 and projects starting July 1.
