Kentucky CSA Week Connects Shoppers with 66 Local Farms

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky Proud, the official agricultural marketing program of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, is currently hosting its Virtual Spring Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Week from Feb. 16-20, Commissioner Jonathan Shell announced. The annual online event connects consumers with local farms offering CSA shares across the Commonwealth.

“It’s always better if you can buy from local farms. CSAs are an excellent and convenient way to do just that while at the same time supporting Kentucky’s farm families,” Commissioner Shell said.

“The CSA Week is a great reminder that we have a large variety of farm products throughout our Commonwealth that can be brought directly into our homes. The hard work of all participating farmers and agencies makes this a success each year.”

Now in its seventh year, the virtual promotion connects consumers with participating farms across the state. Kentucky Proud is partnering with the Center for Crop Diversification and The Food Connection at the University of Kentucky, along with the Kentucky Horticulture Council and the Organic Association of Kentucky.

CSAs allow customers to purchase seasonal shares directly from farms, receiving regular boxes of fresh products such as vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, herbs, flowers, and more. Options vary by farm, offering flexibility in size and duration. This year, more than 66 farms are participating - the highest number to date.

“The Kentucky Horticulture Council is proud to take part in the Kentucky Proud CSA Week and support the farmers who help feed our communities,” said Bethany Cox, Direct Marketing Program Manager at the Kentucky Horticulture Council.

“This event showcases the wide range of Kentucky farms, and the benefits CSAs offer everyone involved.”

“CSA is about building win-win relationships that strengthen locally grown foods, farms, and the wider community," said Katie Harvey, CSA Program Manager at the Organic Association of Kentucky.

"When you sign up for a CSA the upfront commitment makes a season-long impact for growers and you gain convenient access to healthy foods that nourish you and the land.”

Consumers can join the CSA Week Facebook group for updates and explore participating farms online.
