On September 16, 2025, Kentucky State University (KSU) supporters came together at Coleman Crest Farm for the inaugural Sam and Cleo Coleman Kentucky State University Fundraiser.
The event, hosted by fourth-generation farm owner Jim Coleman, honored his late parents, Sam and Cleo Coleman, who were proud graduates of KSU’s Class of 1949 and lifelong champions of the university and its students.
The evening successfully raised $30,000 to support student scholarships, marking a strong start for what is planned to become an annual tradition.
“It is an honor to host this inaugural fundraiser in honor of my parents, Sam and Cleo, at our family farm, Coleman Crest. I want to thank Lieutenant Governor Coleman and all our sponsors for their support of this first big fundraiser for KSU. I know my parents are smiling from heaven knowing that Coleman Crest Farm is committed to raising funds to help pay for scholarships for Kentucky State’s students,” Jim Coleman shared.
“Both Sam and Cleo’s love story and their love for Kentucky State will be forever remembered by this annual event. We are very grateful for all who have supported our students through this fundraiser," KSU President Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo said. "At Kentucky State University, our future is bright - and it is fueled by the power of partnership. Together with our community, alumni, and friends, we are writing a new chapter in KSU’s incredible story.”
The program featured heartfelt remarks from students, Dr. Akakpo, Jim Coleman, and special guest, Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman. “To be here with you all tonight on this beautiful farm of my great cousin has been an honor and I just can’t say enough things about how wonderful Dr. Akakpo has been and will continue to be as KSU continues to grow and win football games, recruit students, and graduate scholars that are going to be such a critical part of the future of Kentucky’s economy,” she said.
Students also expressed appreciation. “I am so thankful for the donors, alumni, community members, and the overall support we as the K-State community have,” said KSU student Jaiya McCargo. “Personally, it was an honor to represent our school and the different organizations I’m in on campus. I am truly proud to be a Thorobred. We are leading with service and impact and striving towards greatness!”
