The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) has announced the winners of its annual Poster and Essay Contest. This year’s theme, “Kentucky Agriculture Makes Me Proud,” gave students the opportunity to show their appreciation for the state’s farming heritage through creative writing and artwork.
“Kentucky residents can be proud of so many things happening in their state. One of those that’s closest to my heart is our dedicated farmers and our agricultural roots,” said Commissioner Shell. “Showcasing how that pride thrives within the community emphasizes the vital role of agriculture in Kentucky. Congratulations to each of these winners. They have shown their gratitude and pride through these pieces of art, both written and drawn.”
The contest received 1,001 entries from across the state. Winners in each category received a $100 prize sponsored by Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom. Their work will be featured at the 2025 Kentucky State Fair in Louisville this August. Additionally, winners will be recognized at a special ceremony on May 10 at the University of Kentucky’s E.S. Good Barn and will attend a baseball game at Kentucky Proud Park.
The digital art award went to Amber Willequer, an 8th-grader from Barren County Middle School. Poster winners ranged from kindergarten to 12th grade, with multiple students from Barren, Hardin, and Fayette counties being recognized.
In the essay category, winners came from various counties and grade levels, including John Clayton Lee (2nd grade), Aria Mackley (3rd), Colt McFarland (4th), and Evan Hamilton (12th).
The contest not only honors student talent but also spreads awareness of the importance of agriculture in Kentucky’s economy and culture. The recognition of these young voices helps encourage a strong connection between youth and the agricultural community.
This event serves as a reminder of the continued value of agriculture and how students are playing a part in celebrating and promoting it.
