KY food biz boost - $8M grants open soon

KY food biz boost - $8M grants open soon

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky's food scene is about to get a boost! Over $8.6 million in federal grants are on the way, thanks to the USDA's Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) program. This funding aims to strengthen local and regional food systems by building sturdier middle-of-the-chain infrastructure.

Eligible projects encompass a wide range: expanding processing capacity, building storage facilities, upgrading transportation, and more. From dairy and grains to specialty crops and aquaculture, diverse food ventures can benefit. Meat and poultry, however, are not included.

These grants, expected to open for applications in early January 2024, are a two-pronged attack on food system vulnerabilities:

  • 1. Infrastructure Grants: Up to $3 million is available for building and improving physical infrastructure. Successful applicants, depending on their status as small or historically underserved businesses, will need to provide a 50% to 25% matching contribution.
  • 2. Equipment-Only Grants: Need a boost for equipment like cold storage units or processing machinery? This track offers up to $100,000 with no matching requirement for approved purchases.

To ensure the funds meet Kentucky's specific needs, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) held a public survey. Your valuable input helped shape the state plan, now submitted to the USDA for approval.

KDA also teamed up with three partners for the program: Kentucky Center for Agriculture & Rural Development (KCARD), University of Kentucky's The Food Connection (TFC), and Community Farm Alliance (CFA). Expect more details about their roles upon state plan approval.

So, Kentucky farmers and food businesses, keep your eyes peeled for the application portal opening in January! This is your chance to build a stronger, more resilient food system for the Bluegrass State.

KDA has created a webpage, kyagr.com/consumer/rfsi.html, to keep information up to date on the grants and the approval process. More information can be obtained by emailing RFSI@ky.gov or calling (502) 573-0282.
