UK Ag Equine Programs: 20 Years Strong

By Blake Jackson

The University of Kentucky's Ag Equine Programs, formerly the Equine Initiative, marks its 20th anniversary in 2025. Established in 2005, the program emerged as a partnership between the university and the horse industry, addressing key challenges and advancing equine education, research, and outreach. Over the years, it has grown into a vital resource for students, professionals, and the broader equine community.

To honor two decades of achievements, the program will host alumni and industry-focused events throughout 2025. A reunion at Keeneland on April 12 and the Horsey Hustle 5K on April 13 will bring together past and present members. Additionally, an evening of appreciation in the fall will recognize the industry’s contributions to the program’s success.

A special initiative, Mane Mission, will encourage community service, with participants tracking their volunteer hours. The goal is to reach 5,000 hours of service, benefiting both equine and non-equine organizations. The year-long celebration will also feature stories of alumni success, research advancements, and philanthropic opportunities to support future students.

The program was born out of necessity after the 2001 Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome crisis, which caused severe economic losses in Kentucky’s horse industry. Recognizing the need for a centralized equine-focused effort, the university engaged stakeholders to shape the Equine Initiative. This led to the development of an undergraduate degree in Equine Science and Management, research expansion, and increased industry collaboration.

Since its inception, the program has evolved significantly, providing hands-on education and fostering innovation. Enrollment has grown steadily, with many graduates pursuing careers in veterinary medicine, research, and equine business. Key research efforts have focused on pasture management, biosecurity, and sustainability, benefiting horse owners and industry professionals alike.

As it enters its third decade, UK Ag Equine Programs remains committed to equine excellence, continuing to educate future industry leaders while supporting research and outreach efforts. The program’s impact on the equine industry reflects its mission—keeping the horse at the heart of everything it does.
