WKU Named Outstanding Agricultural Education Program

Western Kentucky University’s Agricultural Education program has earned the title of Outstanding Postsecondary Agricultural Education Program from the Kentucky Association of Agricultural Educators (KAAE), recognizing its excellence in preparing future agricultural educators through hands-on instruction and leadership opportunities.

The program, offered through the WKU Department of Agriculture and Food Science within the Ogden College of Science and Engineering, serves more than 300 undergraduate students. By combining classroom instruction with practical teaching experiences, the program equips graduates with the knowledge and confidence needed to become successful agricultural educators throughout Kentucky and beyond.

Students receive a well-rounded education that covers agricultural sciences, including plant science, animal science, agribusiness, agricultural mechanics, and safety. Alongside these technical subjects, they complete education-focused coursework that strengthens their teaching abilities and classroom management skills.

A defining feature of the program is its strong commitment to experiential learning. Throughout their studies, students participate in classroom observations, co-teaching assignments, and full-time student teaching placements.

These real-world experiences allow them to apply effective instructional methods while gaining experience managing agricultural education programs, supporting FFA chapters, and overseeing Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs.

With this statewide recognition, WKU continues to strengthen its reputation for developing highly skilled agricultural educators who are prepared to inspire students, support agricultural communities, and contribute to the future growth of the agriculture industry.
