American Farmland Trust Advocates for Smart Solar Development

American Farmland Trust Advocates for Smart Solar Development

As demand for renewable energy continues to grow across the United States, more and more farmland is being converted into solar installations. While renewable energy development is important for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainability, it is important to ensure that these projects are implemented in a responsible manner that protects farmland and the agricultural industry.

To this end, the American Farmland Trust is advocating for "smart solar" development, which seeks to balance renewable energy goals with farmland conservation. The organization recommends that solar developers prioritize the use of non-prime farmland, and other previously developed sites, as well as rooftops and parking lots, before turning to prime agricultural land.

In addition, the American Farmland Trust suggests that solar developers should work closely with local farmers and landowners to develop compensation and land-use agreements that support both renewable energy goals and the long-term sustainability of the agricultural industry. This could include agreements to share revenue from solar installations, as well as commitments to restore farmland to its original use once a solar project reaches the end of its useful life.

By promoting smart solar development practices, the American Farmland Trust hopes to ensure that renewable energy development does not come at the expense of productive farmland and the communities that rely on it. By working together, solar developers, farmers, and other stakeholders can create a sustainable and equitable energy future for all.
