Kentucky high school athletes with ties to agriculture now have an opportunity to apply for one of six scholarships and earn recognition as a 2026 Kentucky Ag Athlete of the Year.
This recognition program is a joint effort between the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA). The initiative highlights the connection between athletics and agriculture, acknowledging the dedication required in both fields.
“The hard work it takes to be a successful athlete is the same type of work that contributes to being a success in the agriculture field,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell. “Discipline, teamwork, patience, and goal setting are just both in sports and agriculture. We are pleased to join our partners at the KHSAA to once again honor these attributes and reward the Commonwealth’s best young athletes and agriculturists.”
Eligible applicants must be graduating seniors in the 2025-2026 school year and actively involved in Kentucky agriculture. They must also participate in at least one KHSAA sport or activity and be accepted into a college, trade school, or university.
While students do not have to pursue an agricultural major, preference will be given to those enrolling in Kentucky schools. Out-of-state institutions will still be considered if a student is pursuing an agricultural specialty.
Two top applicants one male and one female will receive $2,000 scholarships and the title Outstanding Kentucky Ag Athlete of the Year. Four additional students (two males and two females) will each receive $1,000 scholarships. Award recipients will be recognized during the 2026 UK HealthCare Boys’ Sweet Sixteen in March at Rupp Arena.
Scholarship funding comes from voluntary donations through the KDA’s “Ag Tag” program and does not use taxpayer dollars.
Applicants must apply online by December 31 at form.jotform.com/253065526181051.
