Archaeological Dig Uncovers History of Former Slave Homes at Oxmoor Farm

Archaeologists have unearthed evidence of former slave homes at Oxmoor Farm, a historic property in Kentucky that was once owned by the Bullitt family. The excavation, which is part of an ongoing research project, has yielded artifacts and other materials that shed light on the lives of enslaved workers who once lived and worked on the farm.

Researchers have identified at least four structures that were likely used as slave quarters, as well as several other features that are thought to be associated with enslaved labor, such as a cistern and a possible root cellar. The artifacts that have been found include pottery fragments, glass bottles, and other items that provide clues to the diet, hygiene practices, and leisure activities of the enslaved workers.

The project is being led by a team of archaeologists from the University of Louisville, in collaboration with staff from the Louisville Metro Parks Department and local historical societies. The goal of the research is to better understand the history of slavery in Kentucky, and to help preserve and interpret the cultural heritage of Oxmoor Farm.

According to project leaders, the findings from the excavation will be used to develop educational programs and interpretive materials that will help visitors to the farm learn about the experiences of enslaved people and the legacy of slavery in Kentucky. The research is also expected to contribute to a broader understanding of the history of slavery in the United States.
