UK Enhances Beef Systems Analyzer for Cattle Farmers

By Blake Jackson

The University of Kentucky Beef Extension Team has strengthened its Beef Systems Analyzer, a free online management tool designed to help cattle producers improve decision-making using research-based guidance.

The enhancements were made possible through funding from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund (KADF) and expand the tool’s value for both producers and Extension professionals.

The Beef Systems Analyzer reviews major areas of beef production, including nutrition, forage use, herd health, genetics, reproduction, and overall management practices. Producers answer a series of questions about how their operations are managed and marketed, and the system delivers customized recommendations tailored to those responses.

“Using logic-based modeling, the analyzer asks farmers a series of questions about their management and marketing, then uses these inputs to provide the most critical management changes to improve their operation,” said Darrh Bullock, beef Extension specialist with the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

“With every recommendation, producers receive videos and fact sheets to help them implement these practices. Our goal is to improve the efficiency, productivity, profitability and safety of beef operations across the state.”

Starting in 2026, producers who complete the program may earn one hour of educational credit toward the County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP). The updated platform also includes a registration system and improved database features to help county agriculture and natural resources (ANR) Extension agents track participation, compliance, and reporting.

"Educational credits are required for recipients of CAIP funds to facilitate adoption of improved, science-based or sustainable practices that enhance farm management, production and marketing," said Brandon Sears, ANR agent at the Madison County Extension office.

To qualify for credit, producers must register online, complete the Best Management Practices Analyzer and one additional module, and view the required instructional video. Certificates can be printed, downloaded, or emailed upon completion, pending approval from a county ANR Extension agent.

“The system is designed so that producers will not be overwhelmed with a long list of tasks,” Bullock said. “Instead, it offers a manageable set of recommendations. Once farmers complete a set of tasks, they can resume the analyzer for additional insights. Like most software, the best way to learn is simply to use it, and we welcome feedback that can help us continually improve the program.”

Producers can access the Beef Systems Analyzer online or seek assistance from their local ANR Extension office.
