Kentucky Approves Funding for Agriculture and Rural Growth

By Blake Jackson

The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board has approved nearly $3.7 million in funding to support agricultural diversification and rural development initiatives across the state. During its June meeting, the board allocated a total of $3,694,091.50 to various projects aimed at strengthening Kentucky’s agricultural economy.

Commissioner of Agriculture and Board Chair Jonathan Shell emphasized the board’s commitment, stating, "The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board is committed to supporting a wide variety of farming and agricultural projects across Kentucky." He added, "The projects funded today show our goal of strengthening agriculture in many different ways to benefit the Commonwealth and the people who live and work here."

Several county- and state-funded projects were approved, including support for on-farm markets, feed facilities, meat processing upgrades, and new farmers’ market infrastructure. Additional funding will help establish a year-round food hub, expand veterinary services, and support beekeeping initiatives. Local organizations and farms across multiple counties will benefit from these targeted investments.

The board also approved funding through key state programs, including the Pilot Horticulture Incentives Loan Program, which provides $500,000 to growers in Graves and Laurel counties to assist with seasonal working capital needs.

Significant investments were made through county-level programs. The County Agricultural Incentives Program (CAIP) received over $2.1 million to assist producers in improving and diversifying farm operations across 15 counties. Other programs include the Deceased Farm Animal Removal (DAR) Program, which received $63,750 to ensure environmentally responsible livestock disposal, and the Next Generation Farmer Program, with $157,000 awarded to support young producers.

Additional funding includes $41,180 for Shared-Use Equipment Programs and $55,950 for Youth Agricultural Incentives Programs, encouraging community collaboration and youth participation in agriculture.

These investments reflect Kentucky’s ongoing efforts to promote innovation, sustainability, and long-term growth in its agricultural sector.
