Hands-On Farm Tour for Beekeeping and Pollinator Success

Hands-On Farm Tour for Beekeeping and Pollinator Success

By Blake Jackson

Join the Organic Association of Kentucky (OAK) for an informative and hands-on Field Day at Kentucky State University’s Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm in Frankfort, Kentucky, on July 7, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This engaging event focuses on how pollinator habitat restoration, honeybee conservation, and sustainable weed management can strengthen farm ecosystems and improve productivity.

During the tour, participants will explore effective approaches to supporting pollinators while managing weeds in organic cut flower production. Attendees will walk through the farm’s flower plots and observe demonstrations highlighting practical weed control methods.

The program also offers valuable insights into beekeeping practices. Participants will learn how to successfully incorporate honeybees into agricultural landscapes by comparing hive materials and understanding the importance of hive spacing and positioning to maintain strong colonies.

Another key feature of the event is a closer look at building native pollinator habitats. Attendees will examine the why and how of transforming unused spaces—whether on farms or in backyards—into thriving biodiversity areas that provide year-round benefits to crops and pollinators.

Registration is required, with fees set at $5 for OAK members and $10 for non-members.

The Cooperative Extension Program at Kentucky State University plays a vital role in delivering research-based education that enhances agriculture, health, and community development. At the heart of this mission is the Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm, a center for innovation that supports diverse research areas and offers hands-on learning opportunities for farmers and community members alike.
