Deadline approaching for dairy margin coverage program

Deadline approaching for dairy margin coverage program

By Blake Jackson

Attention Kentucky dairy farmers! The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is urging you to sign up for 2024 Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) by the deadline of April 29th, 2024. This program acts as a safety net, helping offset the financial risks caused by fluctuating milk and feed prices.

The program offers various coverage levels, with some even being free (minus a $100 administrative fee). This fee is waived for limited resources, beginning, socially disadvantaged, or military veteran farmers.

DMC provides much-needed financial security, especially considering payments have already begun for January and February 2024. Here's the good news: Kentucky dairy producers can still join the 131 operations that have already enrolled!

This year, the program offers some key benefits for Kentucky farmers:

  • Retroactive Coverage: Sign up now and receive coverage back to January 1st, 2024.
  • Adjusted Production History: Smaller operations with less than 5 million pounds of production can now establish a more accurate production history for better coverage.
  • Combined Supplemental Coverage: If you participated in Supplemental Dairy Margin Coverage (2021-2023), that history will be combined with your established production history for a more comprehensive coverage.

Don't miss out on this valuable program! To determine the best coverage level for your farm and to enroll, visit the USDA Farm Service Agency website or utilize the online dairy decision tool. Remember, the deadline to enroll is April 29th, 2024.
