Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell announces the appointment of Hunter Jones as the director of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Division of Agricultural Economic Development. The appointment reflects the state’s continued focus on strengthening agriculture as a key driver of economic growth.
“Creating a greater economic presence within and for our agriculture community is the goal of the Agricultural Economic Development Division,” Commissioner Shell said. “Hunter’s prior experience and commitment to the growth of Kentucky farmers will be instrumental in the success of this Division. I am pleased to have him onboard and see where he can take Kentucky’s farming future.”
The Division plays an important role in supporting the Kentucky Agricultural Economic Development Board. This board is established through Senate Bill 28 and is designed to help expand and strengthen Kentucky’s agricultural economy. Its work focuses on strategic planning, building strong partnerships, and providing financial incentives to support agricultural growth.
The board administers several programs, including grants, forgivable loans, and revolving loan funds. These programs are intended to support infrastructure improvements, market expansion, and value-added agricultural development. The overall goal is to attract private investment, create new economic opportunities, and support farming communities throughout Kentucky.
The creation of the board reflects Commissioner Shell’s vision that “Agriculture is Economic Development.” In 2024, the commissioner conducts a statewide listening tour, hosting regional meetings with business leaders, agricultural stakeholders, and community members. Feedback gathered during these meetings helps shape the priorities and design of the new economic development initiative.
Hunter Jones brings relevant experience to his new role. He is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and previously worked for two years within the Kentucky Office of Agricultural Policy. This background provides him with a strong knowledge of agricultural programs and policy support.
The Kentucky Agricultural Economic Development Division also oversees the Kentucky Office of Agricultural Policy, which operates under the leadership of Executive Director Brandon Reed.
This office provides staff support to the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board and the Kentucky Agricultural Finance Corporation. Together, these organizations offer grants, incentives, and low interest loans to help agricultural businesses innovate, grow, and remain competitive.
