Kentucky Corn Harvest Reaches Record National Levels

Across Kentucky, combines are rolling through fields as farmers bring in this year’s corn crop, contributing to what is projected to be a record 16.7 billion bushels nationwide.

Harvest season is a time of pride for farm families, marking the culmination of months of careful planning, hard work, and resilience. The sight of golden fields is more than picturesque it reflects the dedication that sustains rural communities and bolsters the state’s economy.

Kentucky plays a significant role in the national corn supply. More than 1.5 million acres of corn are harvested in the state each year, providing economic value, supporting farm families, and sustaining local businesses. This year’s harvest underscores the strength of Kentucky agriculture and the commitment of growers to supply food, feed, and fuel.

Despite strong yields, farm families continue to face economic pressures that challenge profitability. According to the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), corn prices have dropped by over 50 percent since their 2022 peak, while production costs have decreased only slightly by about 3 percent. Expenses for seed, fertilizer, fuel, and land remain high, creating narrow margins even in record harvest years.

While farmers are busy in the fields, KY Corn is actively working to create stronger market opportunities. A key priority is securing year-round access to E15, a fuel blend containing 15 percent ethanol.

Current federal rules prevent E15 sales during the summer, but permanent approval would generate demand for an additional 2.3 billion bushels of corn annually, boosting markets for Kentucky growers while offering consumers lower fuel prices and cleaner air.

In addition, KY Corn is engaging policymakers about high production costs, ensuring the realities of modern farming are understood. By raising awareness of these challenges, the association helps protect family farms that are central to Kentucky’s rural communities.

As this year’s harvest continues, it represents both a celebration of farmers’ accomplishments and a reminder of the ongoing advocacy needed to maintain a strong and sustainable agricultural sector in Kentucky.
