Kentucky Farmers Honored at Appreciation Awards Day

Kentucky Farmers Honored at Appreciation Awards Day

By Blake Jackson

Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell paid tribute to Kentucky farmers during the Farmers’ Appreciation and Awards Day at Murray State University’s William "Bill" Cherry Expo Center on Wednesday.

“The number of risks farmers face every day on the farm are numerous. We are taking today to show our appreciation for the work our farmers do on a daily basis and to recognize the risk they take just doing their jobs," Commissioner Shell said.

"In Kentucky, we have made great strides to mitigate those risks and make farming safer than ever before, but one farm injury is one too many. We want farmers to know we see them and we appreciate them.”

The celebration was organized by Raising Hope, a Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) program focused on the physical and mental well-being of farmers. The initiative highlights the importance of farm safety and health awareness across the state.

For more than 25 years, KDA has promoted safe farming practices through its Farm Safety and Rural Health Team. The team provides training and resources for farm families and is featured at more than 100 events each year, reflecting its continued demand.

The event was held ahead of National Farm Safety and Health Week, which runs from September 21-27 with the theme “Safety First, Avoid the Worst.” Alongside the awards, attendees had access to free health screenings, safety and rescue demonstrations, educational exhibits, an agricultural career fair, and complimentary lunch.

Awards were given in several categories. Honorary Commissioner awards went to Dr. Brian Hoover, Dr. Kristie Guffey, and Connie Gray of Murray State University for their contributions to agricultural safety and for supporting the 2025 appreciation event.

The Friends of Raising Hope award recognized LaRue County FFA and HOSA chapters for hosting a local farmers’ appreciation event, as well as Brandon Reed and Jay Hall from the KDA for their ongoing leadership and support of the Raising Hope program.

Three farmers, Mark Luckett, John Croft, and Dr. Dwayne Driskill were named Farmers of the Year for their commitment to agricultural safety and community well-being.
