Kentucky greens up - $1.8M for urban forests

Kentucky's Governor, Andy Beshear, announced a significant investment of $1.8 million to enhance access to urban forests and green spaces across the state. This initiative, launching in early February, aims to improve public health, quality of life, and environmental sustainability in communities throughout the Commonwealth. 

Funding Opportunities for Communities and Organizations: 

Local governments, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions are encouraged to apply for the Kentucky Division of Forestry's Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Grant. This program, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act and USDA Forest Service, prioritizes underserved and disadvantaged communities through its "Justice40 Initiative," ensuring equitable access to the grant funds. 

Grant Details: 

• Grant range: $1,000 - $250,000 (larger proposals considered) 
• No matching funds required 
• Focus: Projects that increase access to and improve urban forests and green spaces 

Examples of eligible projects: 

• Supporting local forestry staff 
• Assessing urban tree canopy coverage 
• Planting trees 
• Developing forestry workforce training programs 
• Building storm preparedness and recovery initiatives 
• Analyzing heat islands and implementing mitigation strategies 

Supporting Equitable Access: 

The Division of Forestry has created an online tool to assist applicants in determining eligibility and planning their project areas. This tool incorporates various data sources like the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool, Tree Equity Score, and local population data, ensuring projects address the needs of underserved communities.  For more information about the eligibility map or to explore it, visit: https://arcg.is/1TPPyP.  

Benefits of Urban Green Spaces: 

Governor Beshear highlighted the importance of green spaces in urban areas: "With over half of Kentuckians living in or near cities, these green havens are crucial for cleaner air, reduced noise, and improved health and well-being. They foster community connections, provide recreation opportunities, and promote learning for children." 

State Forester Brandon Howard emphasized the multi-faceted benefits of urban forests: "Trees and green spaces are vital to our infrastructure, offering environmental, economic, and health advantages. This funding is a historic step forward in expanding these benefits where they're needed most." 

By providing accessible green spaces, Kentucky aims to create healthier, more vibrant communities for all residents. This initiative underscores the state's commitment to environmental stewardship and equitable development.
