Kentucky Program Promotes Fresh Local Food in Schools

Kentucky Program Promotes Fresh Local Food in Schools

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky school districts that prioritize sourcing food from local farmers can once again take part in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s (KDA) Farm to School Stars Recognition Program.

Now in its second year, the initiative rewards districts that show strong commitment to increasing direct purchases from Kentucky producers.

The program provides financial incentives to the top three participating districts, encouraging schools to incorporate more locally grown products into their meal programs.

By doing so, districts not only support local agriculture but also improve the freshness and quality of food served to students.

“Kentucky farmers grow some of the best food in the nation, and our schools play a vital role in getting that food onto the plates of our students,” Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell said. “When schools buy local, our students, our farmers, and our communities all benefit.”

The program aligns with the objectives of Senate Bill 5 (SB5), recently passed to strengthen local food systems and expand opportunities for Kentucky farmers.

The legislation allows school districts participating in USDA Child Nutrition programs greater flexibility to purchase Kentucky-grown products directly, without being restricted by certain state competitive bidding requirements, while still meeting federal guidelines.

This flexibility can help level the playing field, enabling local farmers to compete more effectively with larger suppliers.

The Farm to School Stars Recognition Program evaluates districts based on the percentage of Kentucky-grown or raised food included in their breakfast and lunch offerings.

To be eligible, districts must participate in the USDA National School Lunch Program, and only those meals will be considered in the evaluation process.

Winners will be announced during Farm to School Month in October. Awards, funded through Ag Tag revenues, include $10,000 for first place, $8,000 for second, and $6,000 for third. Applications must be submitted by July 31, 2026.
