The College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources at Kentucky State University recently hosted a Winter Indoor Growing Workshop on September 6 at the University’s West Louisville Extension Office. The session aimed to equip local growers with practical tools to extend growing seasons and strengthen community food systems.
Led by Alhagie K. Cham, Ph.D., Urban Horticulture Extension/Research Scientist with KSU’s Cooperative Extension Program, the workshop engaged 12 participants from the Louisville metropolitan area.
Attendees took part in hands-on demonstrations covering the setup, operation, and maintenance of indoor growing systems. In addition, lessons focused on crop selection, seasonal planning, and troubleshooting common challenges.
“This program helps community growers gain confidence and practical knowledge they can apply immediately in their homes and neighborhoods,” Cham said. “By supporting year-round production, we are improving food security, expanding what’s grown locally, and building stronger networks among city farmers.”
The Winter Indoor Growing Workshop followed the Urban Organic Agriculture Workshop held in August and precedes the Herbs Gardening at Home Workshop scheduled for October 18. Together, these sessions are part of Kentucky State’s Home Grower Support Program (HGSP) under the University’s Community Resource Development (CRD) initiative.
The program offers one-on-one consultations, training in soil health and composting, pest and disease management, and guidance for hydroponics and container gardening.
Participants also enjoy community networking opportunities, free seeds, and refreshments. The workshops are free and open to all community members.
