New Livestock Center Launches in Kentucky

Kentucky's livestock industry embarked on a significant development with the recent groundbreaking of the Kentucky Livestock Innovation Center.

This facility, poised to be a beacon of advancement for the industry, aims to integrate cutting-edge technology and research to bolster profitability and sustainability for local livestock producers.

Located on a 15-acre site at the University of Kentucky’s C. Oran Little Research Center in Versailles, the center represents a strategic collaboration between the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association and the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. This partnership leverages years of mutual cooperation aimed at fostering industry growth and innovation.

Dr. David Williams, chairman of the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Foundation and head of the center’s construction oversight committee, highlighted the center’s long-term vision: “This facility will be designed to benefit our producers by using and communicating new technology and research from the farm to help them become more profitable and their operations more sustainable, not just in the immediate future but for future generations.”

Funded by a $22 million allocation from the Kentucky General Assembly, the center’s establishment was part of a broader infrastructure initiative under House Bill 1. The investment underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing its agricultural sectors through substantial financial support.

The center’s core mission will extend beyond just research and development. It also includes a Culinary Training Center aimed at boosting consumer demand for value-added products.

This facility will provide crucial education and workforce development opportunities across various sectors, including food processing and retail.

Jeff Pettit, president of the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association and vice chair of the construction committee, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact: “It’s really unbelievable to be at this point and imagine all the partnerships and possibilities that are in front of us. I really think this center will impact producers all over the eastern U.S. and make us a hub for protein production across the region.”

With the support of the Kentucky Livestock Coalition and other key stakeholders, the Kentucky Livestock Innovation Center is set to become a pivotal element in advancing the state’s agricultural landscape, promising a future of enhanced productivity and sustainability.
