SEGG24 - southeastern grain gathering 2024

By Blake Jackson

The University of Kentucky, Ohio Valley Grain Exchange (OVGE), and Dendrifund are joining forces to present the 2024 Southeastern Grain Gathering (SEGG24) on May 8th and 9th at Fasig-Tipton. This event aims to strengthen connections across the entire "local small grain value chain," from farmers to consumers.

SEGG24 offers a unique opportunity for researchers, producers, chefs, and consumers to engage with the regional grain industry. By fostering interaction through workshops, demonstrations, and discussions, the event hopes to solidify the importance of local food systems and their economic impact.

"We want to build a community around the idea that 'Flavor Starts in Your Fields,'" says SEGG24 Chair Sarah Halcomb. Attendees can expect a variety of interactive experiences, including:

  • An opening dinner featuring author Rob Dunn, exploring the connection between flavor and human history.
  • Sensory workshops focusing on bread, beer, and bourbon, highlighting the unique flavors of local grains. Participants will taste test flatbreads led by the UK Food Connection.
  • Research farm visits showcasing the benefits of cover crops and no-till farming practices, along with discussions on the social, economic, and environmental advantages of sustainable grain production.

The event will also delve into the future of grains, featuring collaborative programs on developing new crops like kernza, rye, and rice, led by bourbon industry experts. Additionally, grain hub and value chain leaders will discuss the challenges and opportunities related to cultivating, processing, and marketing local grains.

"SEGG24 exemplifies the collaborative spirit needed to strengthen our regional grain system for the long term," says co-organizer Barbara Hurt. This event promises valuable insights for anyone interested in the future of local and sustainable food production. Registration is now open.
