States Tackle Hunger and Health with Local Food Programs

By Blake Jackson

The National Governors Association (NGA)’s Health Equity Learning Network recently hosted a webinar highlighting how different states and territories in the US are fighting food insecurity and improving maternal health through innovative local programs.

Wyoming’s First Lady Jennie Gordon shared insights into the Wyoming Hunger Initiative, which she launched in 2019. The program’s mission is to end childhood hunger across the state. It works by raising awareness, supporting local anti-hunger groups, and building strong partnerships to provide food for families in need. By connecting organizations and securing funding for community-led projects, the initiative ensures that no child in Wyoming goes hungry.

Meanwhile, New Jersey has taken a proactive step in tackling maternal and infant health concerns. The First Lady of New Jersey introduced the Nurture NJ Maternal and Infant Health Strategic Plan, a part of the broader Nurture NJ initiative that began in 2019. This comprehensive plan is the result of over a year’s worth of collaboration with key stakeholders.

The strategic plan involved input from public health experts, state agencies, doctors, doulas, community leaders, and families. Its goal is to reduce high rates of maternal and infant mortality in the state by improving healthcare access, education, and support for expecting mothers.

These examples show how state-level efforts can lead to meaningful change. Both initiatives focus on creating community partnerships and offering practical support for local issues.

With rising awareness and collaboration, more states are expected to follow these examples and launch similar programs to improve public health and reduce food insecurity. These programs play a critical role in building healthier communities across the United States.
