Fraley Mountain Music Gatherin' Sept. 4-7 at Carter Caves
Kentucky Ag Connection - 08/14/2019

Featuring traditional music from the hills of Eastern Kentucky, the annual Fraley Mountain Music Gatherin' is slated for Sept. 4-7 at Carter Caves State Resort Park.

Named for J.P. Fraley, a Kentucky-native well known throughout Appalachia for collecting fiddle titles at various festivals in Kentucky, West Virginia, and North Carolina, the festival began as a family reunion in the early 1970s.

Musical instruments such as the dulcimer, fiddle and guitar help to tell stories about traditions and life long ago in the eastern Kentucky foothills. Musicians from all over the region will be jamming in parking lots and sharing music around the campfires of Carter Caves State Resort Park.

Offering guests a variety of folk, old-time, western, western swing, early country, and others, the Fraley Festival has not been confined to any one genre. Collaboration at the festival may range from family bands or husband and wife duets, to people playing on stage who just met in the parking lot minutes earlier.

Wednesday night offers a free "jamming in the round" session at the Recreation Shelter House in the campground. Concerts will be held in the Park Amphitheatre on Thursday evening, Friday afternoon and evening, and Saturday afternoon and evening. Concert fees range from $5-$10. Weekend passes are available for $28, which covers admission to all the festival's concerts and jam sessions.

Carter Caves State Resort Park features a lodge, vacation cottages, RV campsites and primitive campsites. The lodge restaurant offers a variety of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Other featured activities at the park include hiking, golf, mini-golf, fishing, horseback riding and swimming. The park is located in northeastern Kentucky, 4 miles off Interstate 64 between Grayson and Olive Hill (exit 161).
