Celebrating KY young artists and writers in agriculture

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky's young artists and writers are shining light on the importance of agriculture in the state. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) recently announced the winners of its annual Poster and Essay Contest, with the theme "Agriculture for a Better Kentucky."

"This contest is a fantastic way to introduce students to the vital role agriculture plays in our lives," said Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell. "These winning entries showcase not only artistic and writing talent, but also a deeper understanding of how agriculture sustains our state and the world."

Over 1,000 entries poured in, with 970 posters submitted. Each winner receives a $100 prize and will have their work displayed at the Kentucky State Fair this August. Additionally, they'll be honored at a special ceremony in May followed by a University of Kentucky baseball game.

Mattie Reynolds, an 11th grader from Hopkins County Central High School, took home the top prize in the digital art category.

The poster contest saw winners across all grade levels, from kindergarteners to high school seniors. Kindergarteners Ella Ruth Lowe and the McKemy twins, Philip and Matthew, were recognized for their artistic endeavors. Other winners included Erina Shiroyama (1st grade), Spencer Avery (2nd grade), Emma Midkiff (3rd grade), and so on, showcasing talent throughout the student body.

Essays also played a part in the contest, with winners emerging from every grade level. Ava Lee (1st grade), Easton Dunn (2nd grade), Colt McFarland (3rd grade), and Ashleigh McDonald (4th grade) were some of the elementary school students who impressed the judges.

The contest not only celebrates student talent but also fosters an appreciation for Kentucky's agricultural heritage. By participating, students gain valuable knowledge about the essential role agriculture plays in their everyday lives.
