Biofuel Boom Lifts Soybean Oil Demand

Biofuel Boom Lifts Soybean Oil Demand

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. soybean industry is expected to benefit from rising demand for soybean oil as renewable fuel production continues to expand.

Soybean oil has long been a valuable product used in food manufacturing and industrial applications. It is commonly found in cooking oils, baking products, and many processed foods. However, the fastest-growing use of soybean oil today is a feedstock for renewable fuels.

Demand for biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel has increased significantly during the past two decades. Government policies designed to support cleaner energy sources have encouraged investment in renewable fuel production and increased demand for agricultural feedstocks.

A major boost came with the announcement of record Renewable Volume Obligations for 2026 and 2027. These targets are expected to increase biofuel production and create additional demand for soybean oil.

USDA forecasts that soybean oil use in biofuel production will reach 17.8 billion pounds during the 2026/27 marketing year. This would account for more than 50% of total domestic soybean oil consumption, making biofuels the leading market for soybean oil.

The shift demonstrates how renewable energy policies are influencing agricultural markets. As more soybean oil is directed toward fuel production, demand for soybeans is also expected to increase.

Strong soybean oil demand is projected to support record-high soybean oil prices in 2026/27. Higher values for soybean oil improve processing margins and encourage additional crushing activity.

The United States has already invested heavily in expanding soybean crush capacity. Between 2021 and 2026, several new facilities were built, and existing plants were expanded to meet growing demand. These investments allow processors to convert more soybeans into soybean oil and meal products.

Increased crush volumes are expected to benefit growers by creating stronger demand for soybeans. The sector is also expected to gain support from continued export activity and expand domestic usage.

USDA forecasts the season-average soybean farm price at $12.00 per bushel in 2026/27, the strongest level since 2023/24. This outlook reflects confidence in both domestic processing demand and the broader soybean market.

Industry leaders continue to view renewable fuels as a major growth opportunity for agriculture. The expanding role of soybean oil in fuel production is creating new revenue streams for processors and helping support farm profitability.

As biofuel production increases and renewable energy goals continue to evolve, soybean oil is expected to remain a key driver of demand within the soybean industry. Farmers, processors, and rural economies are likely to benefit from these market opportunities in the years ahead.
