Kentucky Climate Summary - Aug 1 - 7



An active pattern continued over from the previous week with multiple rounds of showers and storms passing through the area. Overall, the state averaged 1.91 inches, most of which fell from Thursday onwards. Slow storms motions combined with intense rainfall to yet again produce numerous bouts of flash flooding, especially so across the eastern half of KY where grounds were saturated. This rainfall added to an already very wet month of July. Officially, the state averaged 7.93 inches for the month, which is just over three inches above normal and good for the 4th wettest July ever recorded in Kentucky (128 year record).

Temperatures for the period averaged 78 degrees across the state which was 2 degrees warmer than normal and 2 degrees warmer than the previous period. High temperatures averaged from 88 in the West to 86 in the East. Departure from normal high temperatures ranged from 1 degree cooler than normal in the West to near normal in the East. Low temperatures averaged from 72 degrees in the West to 69 degrees in the East. Departure from normal low temperature ranged from 6 degrees warmer than normal in the West to 6 degrees warmer than normal in the East. The extreme high temperature for the period was 94 degrees at BOWLING GREEN APT and the extreme low was 63 degrees at MIDDLESBORO AWOS.

Precipitation (liq. equ.) for the period totaled 1.91 inches statewide which was 0.96 inches above normal and 202% of normal. Precipitation totals by climate division, West 2.36 inches, Central 1.31 inches, Bluegrass 2.00 inches and East 1.97 inches, which was 1.45, 0.39, 1.07 and 0.94 inches above normal. By station, precipitation totals ranged from a low of 0.03 inches at HICKMAN 2E to a high of 5.36 inches at MCKEE 5S.
